Spartanburg, aka Sparkle City or Hub City, is located in the Upstate of South Carolina. The town was first established as a courthouse village in the 1780s and had a front seat to several battles during the Revolutionary War. Several railroads converged in downtown, creating a wheel-shaped center, which earned the town its official nickname: Hub City. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the textile industry was prominent in the area and nearly forty mills were built over that time.
Today, Spartanburg is a diverse community with a historic and vibrant downtown. The main square is just a couple of blocks away from where our contra dances are held and offers many options for an excellent meal.
